Meet Jens and Clara, the German YD2010! PDF Print E-mail

Clara, Jens, what are your top 3 priorities for the UNGA?
Our main aim during the General Assembly is to advocate for youth. Therefore we set our political priorities, arranged with the other Youth Delegates; these priorities are rising awareness of the threat of youth unemployment, reaching a real Youth Participation and a cross section Youth Policy at all levels, formal and informal education and last but not least ensure a resolute follow up of the MDG. During the General Assembly we prioritize several joint activities with the international Group of Youth Delegates, namely the Side Event on the topic of youth unemployment and the foreseen meetings with the UN’s General Secretary and the President of the General Assembly to explain our common priorities and discuss about how we can ensure more Youth Delegates from all over the world.

How were you selected?
The German Youth Delegate Programme has two background organizations, namely the DNK (German National Committee for International Youth Work) which is the German National Youth Council and the DGVN (German Society for the United Nations). The selection process for becoming a Youth Delegate in Germany has four steps: the first one is an application in which you have to describe your motivation; the second one is a questionnaire concerning UN and youth topics that has to be answered in a kind of essay; the third is a telephone interview before the two delegates are selected after a final two-days-long assessment center by the two background organizations, the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) including the advice of the actual Youth Delegates as they ‘know best’ which qualifications are necessary.

How did you prepare? Our aims and the main aspects of our task and mandate are empowerment of young people, advocacy for youth, and capacity building. We understand ourselves as multipliers for political participation. Prior to New York we pass a tour through the whole country in order to find out what problems young people in Germany face, what their opinion and demand is on a variety of subjects. In many different cities we visit young people, organize
workshops and discuss matters such as education, participation, employment and health – areas that particularly touch young people in Germany and around the whole world. In addition, we cooperate closly with our background organizations, former youth delegates, the Federal Foreign Ministry and the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

What is your role in the delegation of Germany?
We accompany as youth advisor and youth experts in our delegation to the UNGA. We also draft and deliver a speach to the third committee in which we point out our political priorities and the points of view of the youth living in Germany as we understand ourselves also like spokespersons of them. We’re strongly integrated into the group of international Youth Delegates because we are convinced through cooperation we can gain more efficiency in our efforts in promoting and furthering youth participation as well as in giving meaningful input from youth’ point of view.

Thank you!

Progress hit a glass ceiling at CSW PDF Print E-mail

A common ”feeling” for progression, but no actual advancement. That’s perhaps how one could describe the atmosphere at the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women which took place in New York from 1st to 14th of March.

The meeting was assembled to commemorate the Beijing Platform for Action, a stunningly demanding document on the advancement of women’s rights made 15 years a go. In my role as a youth delegate, I took part in the meeting within the official Finnish delegation.

The momentum in the UN is rather weak at the moment on a lot of issues. This could also be seen in women’s rights promotion. Some countries and observers, namely Syria, Qatar, Yemen but also Malta, Ireland and the Holy See can be pointed at if some blame is to be found. All in all the Beijing PfA and it’s goals are far from fulfilled, which makes further objectives hard to formulate.

The 2nd International Year of Youth: Quo vadis? PDF Print E-mail

The proclamation of the International Year of Youth on 18 December 2009, approx. eight months before its commencement, generated mixed feelings at the UN. On the one hand, there was great joy as to increased potential of re-asserting and celebrating the importance of youth on a global stage. On the other hand, there was wide skepticism as to the realistic capacity of properly organizing an International Year of Youth within such a short timeframe.

To be noted, the International Year of Youth 12 August 2010 – 11 August 2011 is the second one of this kind. In 1977 Romania spearheaded the initiative to proclaim an International Youth Year. The main objective of the year was to stimulate public awareness of the needs and aspirations of young people and ensure their active participation in economic and social development and the construction of peace.

Apart from the General Assembly and the Commission for Social Development there are more possibilities to include Youth Delegates. The UN GA urges all Member States not only to include Youth Delegates in their delegations to the General Assembly, but also to the Economic and Social Council, its functional commissions and other UN conferences.

Several Member States include Youth Delegates in their delegations to the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on Sustainable Development. Does your country already have a Youth Delegate that will attend these commissions?

World Youth Report 2011 - on migration? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Falko Mohrs

Every two years the United Nations publishes a report that examines the challenges and opportunities existing for youth worldwide. The World Youth Report is of great importance for all young people around the world. It is a crucial working instrument for the YD, the National Youth Councils, for Youth NGO's, other stakeholders of the civil society and for the UN entities themselves. It is now the time to decide on the topic of the World Youth Report 2011. During the last GA the YD held a Working Breakfast in the Swiss Mission to the UN on "Youth and Migration". During this meeting the idea was born to devote the topic of the next report to “migration”.
