4th Newsletter: Youth Fundamental To Achieving the MDGs |

On Wednesday 15 October, the 2008 UN Youth Delegates arranged a side event, in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands, Thailand and Jamaica. Former Secretary General Kofi Annan once stated that leaving young people out of decision making would be like severing a nation’s lifeline. That statement became the basis of the discussion on the role of young people in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Ambassador of the Netherlands opened the event by stressing the fact that Youth Delegates are “outspoken, critical and willing to be involved and participate in bringing about the goals of the United Nations.” The Thai government representative argued that in order to achieve the development agenda, we need to build it up from a grass roots level. He said that there’s a need to get young people involved, make them true stakeholders, and empower them to lead society in the future. The Youth Delegates from Thailand and Jamaica, Tanawat Phaovibul and Traci-Ann Johns, gave speeches about the work in their countries that involves young people in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The side event also featured a panel discussion with Director of the Millennium Campaign Mr Salil Shetty, MDG Co-ordinator for the Global Youth Action Network Mr Vidar Ekehaug, and UNFPA representative Dr Laura Laski. |
