A new generation of Youth Delegates is ready to challenge the United Nations on climate change, the financial crisis and youth participation. The European ones met in Lisbon for a UN Advocacy Meeting early July this year.

In Lisbon lots of work was done, such as discussing and identifying this years Youth Delegate's priorities, furthermore, we decided to organise a side event on the topic of climate justice and started to prepare for the United Nations resolution on youth 2009. Therefor Ms Catarina Corvalho from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Afairs visited us twice - to explain the resolution's structure and discussed about it's contents.

If you want to know more about this and read an interview with Ms Cavalho you may download the first issue of the Newsletter from the youth Delegates to the 64th UN General Assembly here.

"Guide for youth NGOs at UN Meetings" published PDF Print E-mail

On Monday, 16th of February, the European Youth Forum with the Financial Support of the European Commission published a "Guide for youth NGOs at United Nations Meetings". Dania Röpke, chairperson of the WFUNA-Youth Coordinating Committee is the author of the Guide.

The Guide identifies and discusses in which United Nations meetings youth can participate and how they can do so effectively. It is mainly intended as a handbook for representatives of Youth Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), but will also be a valuable resource for youth delegates who are a part of their country's official delegation to the United Nations and for anyone else participating at UN meetings. The Guide provides details on the substance, process and outcome of specific United Nations meetings, and explains how outcome documents and final decisions are reached within various UN bodies. The Guide further explains how to qualify for participation at UN meetings and how to prepare effectively. It provides information on possibilities to give input at a meeting, on how to understand and contribute to the negotiation of an outcome document and on how to collaborate with other youth organizations.

Social integration and youth at the Commission for Social Development PDF Print E-mail

From 4-13 February the Commission for Social Development will meet at United Nations Headquarters in New York, to discuss issues on social integration and its relation to poverty eradication and full employment. The meeting of the Commission is an annual event following up on the World Summit for Social Development held in Copenhagen in 1995, where social integration featured as one of the main themes. Social integration can be described as the process of building the solidarity, capacity and institutions needed to create an inclusive society, where all groups enjoy equal rights, access to basic services and opportunities for participation.

The general perception of youth is that of a vibrant generation with an abundance of opportunities ahead of them. This perception, however, fails to recognize the very real threat of social exclusion that young people face. While socio-economic backgrounds, gender, migrant status, disabilities, sexual orientation and religious beliefs are factors which can lead to social exclusion of all age groups, youth may face a double discrimination because of their age.

Education has been identified as one of the key mechanisms promoting social integration, as equal access to quality education can help to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities in life. However, only an average 65 per cent of the world's eligible youth are enrolled in secondary school.  Access to education proves to be a great obstacle for the 85 per cent of youth living in developing countries, where secondary school enrolment falls as low as 32 per cent. Therefore, for the majority of these young people, the thought of a university degree is a distant dream, as even access to secondary education provides a challenge.

5th Newsletter: In Retrospection, 2008 PDF Print E-mail

At the end of the year numerous news channels look back on the highlights of the past year. What sport records have been made? Which presidents have been elected? And who is elected the man and woman of the year? The broadcast ends with a preview of what’s to come in the next year. Is it going to be a prosperous year, or not? In this last newsletter we take a look at the year of the Youth Delegates in retrospection and on what 2009 will bring us.

We started to get to know each other through e-mail debates as preparations for the Commission for Social Development and the General Assembly. Most of us also met in the preparation meeting in Helsinki. There we identified our common goals as Youth Delegates. In October we finally gathered in New York for the real work.
