The 48th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) will take place at the UN’s headquarter in New York February 3 – 12. The CSocD is one of the functional Commissiond of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and consists of 46 members elected by the ECOSOC. Is your country a member? The CSocD is the key body in following up the Copenhagen declaration announced at the World Summit for Social Development in 1995. In its declaration, world leaders committed themselves to achieving the goals of poverty eradication, expansion of productive employment and promotion of social integration. Sessions of the Commission are open to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in consultative status with ECOSOC.

Youth keep motivation after leaders fail to achieve a safe deal in Copenhagen

The two weeks at COP15 have been a rollercoaster of emotion for the International Youth Climate Movement. The fortnight started with high spirits as international youth were celebrating their achievement of official constituency status. Finally the case for young and future generations was recognised with in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This excitement peaked on Thursday the 10th of December when the Youth NGO constituency, (YOUNGO as they are referred to by the abbreviation-loving UNFCCC), held the “Young and Future Generations day. On this day there was a packed schedule of side events explaining the youth perspective and demands, including a session organised by the European Youth Forum (YFJ) that explored the legal framework of intergenerational equity. 

The novelty and initial enthusiasm inevitably wore off, as the plenary meetings dragged out and negotiators haggled over every line in a draft text document. In this draft document, all the text that was not agreed on was bracketed. This was most of the text.

EU ministers meet for a fresh young perspective even as more youth get blocked from negotiations 

Inside the Copenhagen negotiations today, EU ministers came to have a frank exchange of views with young people from the European Youth Climate Movement. Participants included Ministers from Ireland, Belgium and the French Secretary of State and special envoys from the Netherlands and Finland. In an opening address Irish Environmental Minister John Gormley likened the current negotiations to a student studying for an exam who hasn’t been studying and suddenly realises they have to cram.

Youth address world leaders at high-level plenary at UN Climate Summit, demanding governments commit to bold targets to ensure survival and climate justice.

COPENHAGEN – With over 1000 youth leaders from more than 100 countries gathered in Copenhagen, the International Youth Climate Movement at the UN Climate Summit today sent a powerful message to the assembled world leaders that governments must rise above the divisive politics of the past and show true leadership to ensure nothing less than the very survival of current and future generations.

UN declared 2010 as the International Youth Year PDF Print E-mail

On 20th November, 2009 the UNGA’s Third Committee passed by consensus a resolution tabled by the G-77 and China, proclaiming 2010 as the International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. As time is a key factor in preparing for such commitments such as International Year, the resolution sets the 12 August 2010 as the commencement of this particular international year. 2010 also will mark the 25th Anniversary of the International Year of Youth:
